Two decades before the California food revolution, Walt Disney was planning a revolution of his own. Walt knew that food could be more than nourishment - it could be entertaining, too. The concept of families eating and playing at the same time was an innovation in mid-century America. Food in Disneyland wasn't gray or humdrum. It was full of fantasy and color!
Eat Like Walt is a culinary tour of the park's six lands. Every attraction has a story, and so do many of the menu items. Disneyland's food transports us as much as it satiates us, or as Walt declared, "The food is as fabulous as the fun, too."
Although Disneyland opened in 1955, its culinary history dates back to 1923 when Walt first arrived in Hollywood. Walt was a simple eater yet a big dreamer.  By 1934, four years before his first feature film
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs would be released, Mickey Mouse had made him famous enough to have a recipe published in Better Homes & Gardens magazine. And although Walt never set out to be a restaurateur, he became one, with four restaurants opening at his state of the art Walt Disney Studios in 1940.
From humble beginnings to becoming one of the most famous men on the planet, Walt was more of an everyman than a pampered celebrity when it came to eating. With food as the lens, Walt's private and work life are explored - including recipes from his home, his studio and his Magic Kingdom - ensuring anyone can

Review

DISNEY HISTORY INSTITUTE Didier Ghez August 17, 2017"Talk about a book that took me completely by surprise...This is an outstanding book, full of never-seen-before illustrations and photographs, and impeccably researched by Marcy Carriker Smothers, an author who clearly cares deeply about her subject matter. This is a book that will be a pure delight to fans of Walt Disney himself and to Disneyland enthusiasts...this is clearly a "must have" for many of us."

NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW New & Noteworthy JAN. 22, 2018"Eat Like Walt by Marcy Carriker Smothers. (Disney Editions, $35.) The corn dogs and banana splits at Disneyland are part of its kitschy appeal. But how did that particular American cuisine get there? Like all else at the park, Walt Disney is in the details. This strangely fascinating book lays out his thinking as well as some recipes -- from Adventureland's Pineapple Polynesian Ribs to Main Street, U.S.A.'s Potato Salad."

ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER Anne Valdespino February 28, 2018
"Smothers' creation isn't a cookbook. It's a history book with recipes, one that required travel, two years of researching, writing, and a dogged determination to tell a tale about Disneyland that had never been told before."

HUFFINGTON POST Chuck Mirarchi October 24, 2017"This book really is a must-have for any Disney fan. It not only gives a never-before told history about Walt and Disneyland, but also this book is filled with glorious photos and sketches - many seen for the first time - of Walt and Disneyland, as well as images of many of the various restaurants menus."

BUSINESS INSIDER "One of 19 great coffee table books for Disney fans."

From the Author

I am an ordinary person with extraordinary curiosity. I call myself a Food Explorer and that's the focus of my career in writing and broadcasting. Food is fun! I have hosted several radio programs, including Food Guy and Marcy with the Food Network's Guy Fieri. Our playful banter could be heard in many markets across the country and led to my first book, Snacks: Adventures in Food, Aisle by Aisle.
In no particular order I like traveling the world, Broadway musicals, consorting with race horse persons, cooking for family and friends, reading, fitness, soul searching and wine.
I am a bad hungry person, don't like the cold, and adore my first (or three) cups of coffee in the morning.
When I am not adventuring, I live in Sonoma County, which according to Luther Burbank is "...the chosen spot of all this earth as far as Nature is concerned." And I agree.

Really nice looking book. Has a beautiful dust cover with glossy accents. The content within is framed with retro mid century designs. It's packed with photos, letters, concept art, accompanied by historical info and trivia about the evolving dining experiences at Disneyland. Many of the restaurants are still operating, decades after their opening, like the Golden Horseshoe in Frontierland.

It was enjoyable to read through the food history of Disneyland with Walt. The recipes are next on the list to do and, when I go back to CA, try to get into some the places Walt ate at outside the bubble.

I received my copy of this book in the mail last week, and read it cover to cover in one sitting. It’s clearly a true labor of love, and an absolute must-have for any Disney lover in your life.

My wife and I are huge Disneyland fans, and in part it’s because of the culture of food – from the nostalgic (Monte Cristo) to the delightful (Dole Whip) to the delicious (Corndog), we always enjoy our time eating in the park. Marcy takes us on a journey that not only demonstrates how integral food was to the idea of Disneyland from Day One, but showcases the insight Walt had about how people ate (and gives us a wonderful glimpse into his own eating habits).

The small curiosities in this book – from hand-written instructions on what to stock in his own pantry, to original menus from his workplace restaurants – alone are worth the price of admission. The trove of never-before-seen photos of early restaurants and people are just icing on the cake. And Marcy tells the story of food with a wit and fondness that make you feel like you were actually there – and make reading an absolute delight. Quotes and anecdotes abound, and there are little factoids that may be new to even the most seasoned Disney nerd. She clearly did her research, and it shows.

It’s a perfect coffee table book – easy to skim, well-organized, great photos, and a high-quality feel. It’s the kind of book you’ll find yourself looking up from time and again to nudge the person next to you with a, “Hey, did you know…” I’ll be ordering plenty of copies as Christmas gifts, and really do recommend it to anyone who loves food, Disneyland, or both. (And the recipes included in the back are surprisingly tasty from what we’ve tried so far!).

First and foremost, there is absolutely no need for you to have ever stepped inside Disneyland or any of its siblings, nor ever watched a Disney film (is that even possible?) to thoroughly enjoy this book. It may be specific to an area geographically, but it is much more…it’s about a time in our American history that ached for some sense of post-war normalcy and unmitigated (yet sophisticated) fun, as well as its people’s dreams of what its future could hold: at the very least new technology and how it would hasten the shrinkage of what has indeed become a very “small, small world.” It not only inspired hope and aw for millions of its actual visitors but also for those who read or heard about the growing Disney empire from around the world. Were it not for Smothers’ intimate knowledge of all things Disney and her insatiable appetite (pun intended) to explore history through its foods and the multiple ways it influences (and can label and define a period of time) this book could not have been written. And it’s not a book you breeze through once and set aside. In only the few weeks it’s been out, guests in our home are drawn to it constantly; it has spawned many a long discussion about Disneyland itself (and how some of us secreted away from or bartered our E-tickets* with other family members), the worldwide influence its now mega-sized organization has had, and where its future (as well as our own) lies. The included photos and graphics are a hoot, especially the menus with pricing I don’t even recall ever being that cheap! (* About E-Tickets in short: When Disney land first opened you purchased a booklet of tickets lettered A through E, with a certain quantity of each. For example, an A-ticket might get you a simple “granny approved” ride in the Mad Tea Cups, but to ride the then most thrilling of experiences—Space Mountain--you had to forfeit one of the ever-prized E tickets. This ticketing method sort of added to the experience…for locals who frequented the park, keeping one’s booklets with a mish-mash of unused lettered tickets—they had no expiration--could elicit great envy (and fights) among friends during future visits! Definitely a generational “thing” that eventually caved to the more current “all access” type of ticketing prevalent at most such parks (Disney or not) today.) Thank you, Marcy, for this most enjoyable double E-ticket ride of a past that’s still evolving into becoming our future!

This is a great book for Disney fans who are interested in the history of the food offerings at the Disney theme parks. However, for me there are two fatal flaws. The first is, the absolutely tiny print. This seems to have become commonplace in publishing today, and it's a real pain to have to struggle to read a book that's meant for enjoyment. After all, Disney has been around for awhile, and I'm sure many older fans of Disney's early years would like to read this book. The second is, there is basically nothing about Disney's recent or current food offerings. That's too bad, because I bought this for my adult son who is a diehard Disney fan and has been to all the parks repeatedly. I hoped he'd be able to find some more recent happy memories in these pages, and maybe a recipe or two for things he's eaten there. I only took off one star because it's a great concept, but not quite what I'd hoped for.

I was skeptical when I first heard that a book was coming out entitled "Eat Like Walt," because as everyone knows Walt only ate hamburgers, hot dogs and chili. I'm so glad I went ahead and preordered anyway. What an incredible work. It's decidedly in my top five favorite Disney history books, maybe even top three. There's wealth of information here--even the most serious Disney nerd will learn something new--and at the same time it's a very fun, engaging read. I know it's cliched, but you will not want to put this book down. It's also a very aesthetically-pleasing physical volume: a good size, so that its many images are reproduced at a comfortable scale, and with handsome little borders around the pages that evoke the middle of the last century. I'm very happy with my purchase and you will be too.
