Eat Like Walt: The Wonderful World of Disney Food Hardcover – September 19, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
Eat Like Walt is a culinary tour of the park's six lands. Every attraction has a story, and so do many of the menu items. Disneyland's food transports us as much as it satiates us, or as Walt declared, "The food is as fabulous as the fun, too."
Although Disneyland opened in 1955, its culinary history dates back to 1923 when Walt first arrived in Hollywood. Walt was a simple eater yet a big dreamer. By 1934, four years before his first feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs would be released, Mickey Mouse had made him famous enough to have a recipe published in Better Homes & Gardens magazine. And although Walt never set out to be a restaurateur, he became one, with four restaurants opening at his state of the art Walt Disney Studios in 1940.
From humble beginnings to becoming one of the most famous men on the planet, Walt was more of an everyman than a pampered celebrity when it came to eating. With food as the lens, Walt's private and work life are explored - including recipes from his home, his studio and his Magic Kingdom - ensuring anyone can Eat Like Walt.

NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW New & Noteworthy JAN. 22, 2018"Eat Like Walt by Marcy Carriker Smothers. (Disney Editions, $35.) The corn dogs and banana splits at Disneyland are part of its kitschy appeal. But how did that particular American cuisine get there? Like all else at the park, Walt Disney is in the details. This strangely fascinating book lays out his thinking as well as some recipes -- from Adventureland's Pineapple Polynesian Ribs to Main Street, U.S.A.'s Potato Salad."
ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER Anne Valdespino February 28, 2018
"Smothers' creation isn't a cookbook. It's a history book with recipes, one that required travel, two years of researching, writing, and a dogged determination to tell a tale about Disneyland that had never been told before."
HUFFINGTON POST Chuck Mirarchi October 24, 2017"This book really is a must-have for any Disney fan. It not only gives a never-before told history about Walt and Disneyland, but also this book is filled with glorious photos and sketches - many seen for the first time - of Walt and Disneyland, as well as images of many of the various restaurants menus."
BUSINESS INSIDER "One of 19 great coffee table books for Disney fans."
From the Author
In no particular order I like traveling the world, Broadway musicals, consorting with race horse persons, cooking for family and friends, reading, fitness, soul searching and wine.
I am a bad hungry person, don't like the cold, and adore my first (or three) cups of coffee in the morning.
When I am not adventuring, I live in Sonoma County, which according to Luther Burbank is "...the chosen spot of all this earth as far as Nature is concerned." And I agree.

My wife and I are huge Disneyland fans, and in part it’s because of the culture of food – from the nostalgic (Monte Cristo) to the delightful (Dole Whip) to the delicious (Corndog), we always enjoy our time eating in the park. Marcy takes us on a journey that not only demonstrates how integral food was to the idea of Disneyland from Day One, but showcases the insight Walt had about how people ate (and gives us a wonderful glimpse into his own eating habits).
The small curiosities in this book – from hand-written instructions on what to stock in his own pantry, to original menus from his workplace restaurants – alone are worth the price of admission. The trove of never-before-seen photos of early restaurants and people are just icing on the cake. And Marcy tells the story of food with a wit and fondness that make you feel like you were actually there – and make reading an absolute delight. Quotes and anecdotes abound, and there are little factoids that may be new to even the most seasoned Disney nerd. She clearly did her research, and it shows.
It’s a perfect coffee table book – easy to skim, well-organized, great photos, and a high-quality feel. It’s the kind of book you’ll find yourself looking up from time and again to nudge the person next to you with a, “Hey, did you know…” I’ll be ordering plenty of copies as Christmas gifts, and really do recommend it to anyone who loves food, Disneyland, or both. (And the recipes included in the back are surprisingly tasty from what we’ve tried so far!).
