“… when it comes to understanding the soul of what makes Middle Eastern cooking so delicious, it's one of the best hidden treasures on the market.”―Jessica Soffer, Saveur Magazine

Now available in paperback for the first time, this unique Hippocrene cookbook explores the flavors of the Jewish-Iraqi table. When the Jews fled Iraq for Israel, they could not take their material possessions, but they did take their culture―and their rich cuisine. With Mongolian, Turkish, and Indian influences, Jewish-Iraqi cuisine is a special blend that has rarely been documented. Rivka Goldman takes the reader through her memories of an ancient land and culture and the culinary heritage passed on to her by her mother, Nazima.

This elegant cookbook memoir describes the ways in which the unique sociopolitical history of the Jewish-Iraqi people has impacted their foods and the ways in which they are eaten, supplying over 100 healthful family recipes. Refreshing salads, hearty stuffed vegetable and meat dishes, and wholesome dumpling, fish and rice dishes all accompany tales of friendship, loyalty, persecution, escape, exile, and, of course, celebration.

Sample recipes:

  • Stuffed Meat Pockets (Hashwa ab Lahm)
  • Pickled Mango (Ambah)
  • Okra, Garlic and Mint (Bamia ab Thum oo Nanah)
  • Chicken, Garbanzo Beans, and Raisins (Gige ab Hmas)
  • Beef, Zucchini and Leek Soup (Marag ab Lahm oo Koossa)
  • Feta Cheese Omelets (Aja ab Jibin)
  • Garlic and Basil Fish (Smack ab Thum oo Rihan)
  • Feta and Spinach Pie (Burekas im Gevina veh Tered)
  • Semolina Dumplings with Zucchini (Kha Hamnsta)

We have made two recipes from this cookbook, one meat and one fish. Both were wonderful. Highly recommend and look for to more culinary treasures .

It's great to finally see a book that documents Jewish Iraqi cuisine. (The only other one I have come across was "The best of Baghdad cooking, with treats from Teheran" by Daisy Iny but that is no longer in print...)

I made a couple of the recipes in this book. They were easy to follow and came out wonderfully. My ancestry is from Bagdad and the spices used there are a little different from those used in this book. But, I enjoy this book very much. The recognition of our foods and history is much appreciated.

This book brought to life my grandmother's kitchen that I thought may have been lost with time. The nostalgia and palate has since loved this book. Only one complaint is that it is too wet. In general, you have to decrease the amount of water and wet foods (i.e. tomatoes) that the recipes call for, and once you do, they are perfect.

I bought this for a friend's mother for Rosh Hashanah last year. She's Jewish by marriage (I'm strictly a Protestant goy), but says the Jewish Iraqi dishes are authentic. It's hard to find Sephardic Jewish cookbooks, but she says this is a great one and has all the recipes her late mother-in-law made for the family.

Mama Nazima's Jewish Iraqi Cuisine was a disappointing book. It lacked the love and the originality/uniqueness of Persian cooking and certainly is not a standout cookbook. Nice cover though....

Good recipes. the text was not high quality on kindle, not sure why. It looked like it was scanned from other pages and Mama and printed into a book. Still legible though.

it always amazes me when cookbooks have a religions name in them. Food is cultural it doesn't come from religion. Christians in Iraq don't eat the same things that Christians in the US eat do they? My family isn't Jewish but we have always cooked these exact same recipes so I don't understand.

Also, someone actually said they're disappointed that this book had no Persian recipes. Not the same country hun. You got the wrong book if you want Persian.

I read this with growing excitement. Some of the recipes are familiar but having the recipes means my attempts to replicate will be more successful. Salads and vegetable dishes are first on my list.
