Custard and Jelly Dessert

Custard and Jelly Dessert

This custard jelly dessert is a real classic sweet that often appears at our family gatherings in Greece. It’s rather simple, with three layers - a biscuity base, custard cream and a jelly topping. But don’t be fooled, it’s the type of simple dessert you need a solid recipe for, as many make it, and only some succeed! Possibly that’s because they have custard and jelly dessert recipes with a special, ‘secret’ ingredient or two which they are not prepared to reveal! I had to make my own, through trial and error - and have arrived at an easy, failsafe recipe. Once you have the recipe, and know how to make this custard and jelly dessert, it is just the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon in the sun, ice-cold refreshing frappé in hand - the Greek way (if you don’t know what a Greek frappé is, take a read of our blog on Greek coffee culture here)!

Greek Christmas Honey Cookies (Melomakarona)

Greek Christmas Honey Cookies (Melomakarona)

This traditional Greek Christmas recipe is a must-bake in our household come Christmas time, infusing the house with that festive scent of baking, orange, cinnamon and spices. It’s also our go-to gift, when visiting friends and family over the festive period. Instead of a bottle of wine or bunch of flowers, we tend to create a plateful of Melomakarona and Kourampiedes to take round for the host (sometimes there’s a bottle of wine too, of course!) These Greek Christmas cookies take their name from a mixture of ‘meli’ - honey, and the ancient Greek word ‘makaria’ - blessed. With that kind of meaning, you can see the reason that they’re a central part of foodie Greek Christmas traditions (as well as for their taste, of course). Once soaked in honey, these biscuits are moist, flavoursome and gently spiced - in short, the perfect Christmas mouthful. In some regions Melomakarona are known as Finikia, but occasionally recipes for Finikia ask you to deepfry them instead of oven bake them. Don’t worry about making too many - they always get eaten one way or the other. Traditionally, we use any Melomakarona crumbs to make these walnut-filled Kariokes! These are a great Christmas dessert, or an addition to your midmorning cup of coffee - it’s Advent, after all, so it’s time to indulge! I love to sit down in a cosy chair for ten minutes and eat a honey cookie, taking in a moment’s quiet during the festive rush. I highly recommend it!

Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Cookies

Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Cookies

You’ve heard of red velvet cake, now try fooodlove’s red velvet chocolate chip cookies! Don’t you hate it when you buy a bag of cookies and they snap like a biscuit?! For me, a cookie has to be squidgy and bendy; crisp on the surface but gooey inside. These are the perfect ‘squidgy’ cookie, with that cocoa-infused red velvet taste and white chocolate chips melting in every bite. What’s more, the colour makes them the perfect Valentine’s Day baking recipe - or birthday party treat! Try to find a paste food colouring rather than the liquid drops most easily available in the supermarket. The liquid ones just don’t deliver the red colour as thoroughly, and if you use lots of extra fluid the moisture levels in the mix will get too high. Feel free to swap for another colour of chocolate chips, too - but I prefer white, as I think it looks brilliant against the red, and also because that soft creaminess is a bit reminiscent of the cream cheese frosting you might top a red velvet cake with.

Wine Cookies with Sesame

Wine Cookies with Sesame

Biscuits with white wine? Trust me, it works so well! Koulourakia is a traditional Greek cookie recipe resulting in cookies that are crunchy on the outside and light within. They’re considered something to cook for a celebration - traditionally for Greek Easter, but these are so good that the recipe has spilled out, and is frequently cooked through the rest of the year too. We Greeks call these ‘cookies’, but these are not the American, chewy kind - more like Italian biscotti. I came up with these ‘Koulourakia krasata’ - white wine-infused cookies - when I was inviting some friends over for coffee, and wondering what to make. I stumbled across this recipe, gave it a tweak, and here we are! These sesame-crusted biscuits are the perfect companion to a Greek coffee with friends (Greek coffee culture is a big deal!) - or with whichever type of coffee you prefer!
