When I first saw this recipe on Tyler Florence’s website, I wasn’t sure if it was a recipe for baby food or regular food. He does both. And while I know nothing about babies and their eating habits, I would have to guess this would work as a baby food item. But it also works [...]
I started making what I called “Savoury Cake” as finger food for my daughters’ parties. It’s easy to eat, flavoursome, and makes an alternative to sandwiches. It’s also a perfect toddler food recipe (I’ve never met a toddler who isn’t tempted by something that looks like cake)! This recipe shouldn’t be relegated to the ‘kids party food’ category though. When we had leftovers of this savoury bake from the kids’ parties we’d snack on it later, and realised just how versatile (and tasty!) it is. We started eating this for breakfast, as a side dish at lunch, and even as a late-night supper or snack. The ingredients make it similar to the filling of the British classic the quiche, but this is lighter on liquid and with flour added through. This gives it a lovely moist crumb and a slight crust. I love this as a packed lunch option (for myself or for the kids), and as a savoury afternoon treat when I’m feeling peckish. Feel free to mix it up with other vegetable varieties, or by adding ham or bacon.
Whether you have kids or not, I always want to find reasons to celebrate as the weather draws in, finding excuses for activities to bring the family together in the kitchen. These Halloween bakes are the perfect excuse. Following on from last week’s pumpkin chocolate chip bread recipe, these are a real commitment to the season! I tend to buy some little spooky figurines, or the cute googly eyes above, just to add that bit of Halloween fun for the kids for this bake. But they work perfectly well without, too, for a more grown-up treat! These Halloween pumpkin cupcakes channel the US tradition to use pumpkin in baking around this time of year. Using pumpkin in desserts just isn’t as common in the UK - I don’t know why, as it makes for a deliciously moist, flavoursome and seasonal addition to sweets and bakes! The warming spices make these cupcakes feel like little bites of pure autumn. They really can satisfy all season long; feel free to leave out the orange colouring and any fun Halloween decorative touches if you want a more stylish seasonal bake for the grown ups to enjoy - far beyond the 31st of October!
