Cireng (short for aci goreng or fried tapioca) is a snack from West Java that is made from tapioca starch mixture. The texture of cireng is chewy and slightly crunchy on the outside if you eat it while it still hot. Originally cireng is made from tapioca flour and hot water, and sometimes flavoured with garlic or chopped scallions. Along with the times, the seller innovates and combine the dough with cheese (processed cheddar cheese), corned beef, meatballs, sausage or even teriyaki chicken. What is French onion soup? The other day, I went to this American restaurant with family and ordered French Onion Soup as starter. Oh my god, I loved it so much and that moment , decided to try out at home. Did some research on it and found out that it is a French delicay, where onions are nicely caramelized and infused with thyme and beef or chicken broth. It is then topped with crusty bread and Gruyere cheese and then broiled for few minutes in the oven to get melted , bubbly top. There are basically 2 essential components for a good French Onion soup. The first one is the stock, which should be of really good quality and second most important thing is how you caramelize the onions. Caramelizing the onions is the most time consuming and takes around 30-40 minutes. The more you caramelize, deeper the color of the onions and more rich will be the flavor of the soup. What cheese is in French Onion Soup? Traditionally, they use Gruyere in this particular soup , but if you cannot find it in grocery store, you can still prepare this recipe by substituting with any other good quality cheese. It has salty, nutty flavor. I did not find it in my local grocery store, so , used Noreweign Jarlsberg Cheese (it has similar texture and flavor as Gruyere).
